Colchester2020 Travel Plan Club gives greater incentives to travel by bus

Members of the Colchester2020 Travel Plan Club are to be given even more incentive to travel by bus thanks to an even better deal on a 12 Single Journey flexible discount ticket.

The Colchester2020 Travel Plan Club works with local businesses and organisations to encourage more sustainable travel to work. Part of its role is to encourage staff to travel sustainably through discount and incentive schemes.

Members of the Club include the University of Essex, NHS North East Essex, Colchester Borough Council and Colchester Institute, which together total around 10,000 staff and as many students. By working together the group has been able to negotiate better transport deals, encouraging staff to think again about how they travel, which in turn will help to ease congestion.

The latest deal to be negotiated by the Colchester2020 Travel Plan Club for its members is for a reduced price 12 Journey Ticket that allows staff to choose how they travel each day. It’s ideal for those who use different modes of transport on different days, or for part time workers who don’t gain the full benefit from other weekly or monthly tickets.

The ticket is already available to the public to buy from First costing £15 for 12 journeys.

Now anyone who works for a Colchester2020 Travel Plan Club member organisation will receive a further 35% reduction on the ticket when they travel with First Bus. Some of the member organisations have decided to invest further in the scheme, offering staff discounts of 50% on the ticket.

Jeremy Lucas, Colchester2020 Lead Partner for Transport, said: “This is a great example of how being part of the Colchester2020 Travel Plan Club can help organisations to access even better discounts on transport for their staff.

“By working with businesses throughout the borough in this way we can help people to see that making simple changes to the way they travel not only saves them time and money, it can also help to ease congestion, too.”

Julian Elliot of First Group, said: “The 12 Journey Ticket is already great value for money, however we’re pleased to have been able to work with the Colchester2020 Travel Plan Club to encourage some of the town’s major employers to make it easier than ever for their staff to travel by bus.”
