Many Africans spend 4-hours per day walking, or 1/4 of their income paying for transport. A bike can save this every day, helping to break the poverty trap.
Colchester2020 Travel Plan Club challenges you, your business, or your school to join in Bike Week and raise money to send a shipment of bikes to Africa via local charity Re-Cycle
Bike Week is a national event, held between the 14th and 22nd June, with towns and cities from all over the country participating in a wide range of cycling activities and celebrations.
In 2008, family’s are at the heart of Bike Week, and Colchester2020 is promoting cycling as a way of bringing families together, a unifying yet liberating activity which will enable family members to get fit and have fun together.
This year we are not only organising lots of events to help you, your colleagues and your families to get on your bikes, but we also want families in Africa to benefit from Colchester’s cycling efforts.
Local charity Re-Cycle refurbish second hand bikes and ship them to African communities so that families can access essential services such as education, jobs, healthcare, markets, water and firewood etc. The project we are supporting is a charity called the Bicycle Empowerment Network (BEN) based in Namibia in South West Africa.
All you have to do to take part is raise money or give a donation as an organisation or an individual, by cycling during Bike Week between the 14th and 22nd June.
Why not try cycling to work or school, participate in one of the many cycle events that are being organised locally, or organise your own cycling events?
We hope that you will join in, get on your bike to have fun and improve yours and your family’s life while improving the lives and opportunities of people families living in Namibia!
Bike Week plans and events will be publicised via the local media so please keep us posted about events you organise.
